Things to do in the Ironbound section of Newark, NJ.

Newark is one of my favorite places to go out to eat, just because I’m a huge fan of Iberian cuisine, be it Portuguese, Spanish, or Basque. The Ironbound section of the city is one of the oldest and culturally rich neighborhoods in the area, with lots of Portuguese, Spanish and Brazilian restaurants and shopping to be had.

Or, why not try one of these:
Purchase fresh fish flown in from Portugal at Ironbound fish markets on Thursdays and Fridays.

Great restaurants - have lunch or dinner before or after attending an event at NJPAC, Prudential Arena, Red Bulls Stadium, Newark Bears Stadium.

Visit the unique catacombs located under the Ironbound's Immaculate Heart of Mary Church.

Take a guided walking tour of the Ironbound provided by The New Jersey Historical Society and the Ironbound Business Improvement District (IBID).

Sample the delectable Portuguese custard cups from one of the Ironbound's great bakeries.

Strut your stuff on the dance floor to the sultry sounds of soca, samba and other Brazilian beats at an Ironbound nightclub.

Try the freshly made Portuguese-style sausages at Lopes Meat Market.

Have a Brazilian-style hamburgao, unlike anything you will find at McDonald's.

Check out the higher carat, higher quality European gold jewelry at one of the Ironbound's top jewelers.

Enjoy a caipirinha cocktail made from Brazilian sugar cane liquor.

Great shopping and poultry markets

Find the perfect pair of shoes, imported from Spain, Portugal or Brazil that you'll never see at your local shopping mall.

Experience a meat-focused food extravaganza at an Ironbound rodizio restaurant.

Taste some bacalhau , or salted cod, a staple of Portuguese and Spanish cuisine.
